2025 Elevator Project
Starting May 29, 2025, we are having all 6 elevators overhauled. This is mostly behind the curtain updates of the motors and hardware that you don't see when riding the elevator. New motors and gears, new ropes (cables), door closer pieces, parts and pieces inside the elevator tower on the roof and on the top of the cabs but not inside the cabs.
2025-06-05 - South Elevator tower - Large elevator motor and cable pulley removed, new motor lifted to the roof and dragged into place on the rails. The crane used is actually 223 feet tall to the tip (the building is about 130' tall). It had to be that tall to reach over to the middle of the roof tower doorway. A lesson learned - the first motor was sent up still attached to the delivery pallet but that does not fit in through the doorway of the tower, so they had to unmount the motor and mount and drag them in through the doorway. Other info - they did start on May 29 doing smaller repairs while waiting for the crane to be available. They had to dismount the old motor in the tower and separately replaced door closer parts on each floor of all the elevators.
2025-06-20 - South Elevator progress - The motor is in place. They had to lift that gray motor and sheeve assembly, slide new girders underneath it, weld those girders in place. They then lowered the new motor assembly onto the new girders and then had to bolt that whole rig together. Then they installed the new "ropes" (what we more commonly call cables). Each cable by itself is rated to hold the whole elevator unit in place - remember the full weight of the elevator unit, plus people inside is counterbalanced by a weight set on the other end of the cable. So, the cable has probably close to an 8000-pound capability. Each cable has a center core of hemp rope with metal wires wrapped around it to create the total rope. The inner hemp rope carries the lubricant for the cable.
Today's update - equipment is in the tower, the large elevator motor assembly is in place, the new ropes have been installed. They are working on the wiring and component parts of the elevator.
